Tape Forensic Analysis Software - MM/PC
Before our award winning tape forensic analysis software, MediaMerge/PC (MM/PC), an examiner had to try to find a software driver for the tape drive, try to determine what the backup software was, and then guess the version. The examiner then had to try to obtain that software, install it, and figure out how to use it. To do so was a long, tedious process that could significantly delay the results.
MM/PC changes all this by allowing the user to read a tape in any format and also look at any part of the tape in an unprocessed mode. Using Adaptec's ASPI I/O layer, the need for drivers is totally negated; even 25-year-old SCSI tape drives can be attached to a PC without any difficulties.
The MM/PC program is extremely simple to use, and no knowledge of he original backup or interchange program is required in order to restore the files.
Because MM/PC can also read the raw data on occasions where the tape has become corrupted, it may still be possible to view or recover information on the tape that the original backup program would report as a 'terminal' error.
MM/PC and other eMag tools are often used by investigation agencies to obtain relevant data files for subsequent analysis.
MediaMerge/PC is awarded High-Tech Crime Network's New Millennium Award.
