There was a man on the radio yesterday who said he knew it was time to flee his house when he saw a fish swim by his back deck. The closest body of water used to be a quarter mile from his home.
It's nice that this gentleman has a sense of humor about the situation. However, for most, this is no laughing matter. According to the local news stations, the vast majority of those displaced by the floods did not have flood insurance because their homes were considered to be in no flood zones. Well, apparently mother nature had something to say about that.
Another story is from Clarkdale Elementary. The children were in class as the flood waters started coming in, creating a panic. Luckily, they were able to keep the children safe and bus them to a higher location, away from the rising waters. The school may be a total loss, as once it was all said and done, the water had stopped just short of the roof.
It's been a crazy few days, and hopefully the worst is over. If you have the ability to help out those affected by the flooding, I've included links below to the Metro Atlanta Red Cross (they are currently accepting monetary donations only) and to Be A Hero For Clarkdale Elementary (accepting donations at School Box locations to replace the children's school supplies.)
If you do not have flood insurance, I highty recommend contacting your insurance agent today to ask about it. DO NOT for one moment think this will not happen to you; low risk flood zones are still flood zones.
