Data Migration (Mainframe and Midrange)

Data Migration is the process of moving static or preexisting long-term retention data to a newer technology. Typically this involves the moving of 3480/90 cartridges to a combination of Virtual and Deep Tape (e.g. Magstar) technologies. The process and issues are largely dictated by the platforms and applications involved. Why migrate data? To take full advantage of newer technologies and your investment in them, it is necessary to port your older data to such new storage platforms.

Mainframe (OS/390)

The dynamics of migrating mainframe data are fairly consistent. Some applications provide their own means of data migration, such as HSM, while others have no inherent capability or internal functionality to handle such activities. Mainframe data migrations are also different from others due to the number of applications and users involved. Midrange systems, for instance, often have only a single user/application creating the tape volumes while mainframes often have hundreds. With this in mind, it is important to have a data migration strategy that addresses the masses mostly for efficiency's sake.

We provide several software and consulting services to assist you in migrating your mainframe data so contact us today.

Midrange

Typically midrange environments present fewer obstacles than a mainframe data migration due to the nature of the data. Most midrange data is simply disk backups and was generally created by one or a few users/applications. With this in mind, it is much simpler to move midrange data to new mediums, and production systems are not needed to handle the workload. We provide the tools to perform data migrations offline in a non-obtrusive and cost effective manner.

eMag provides several software and consulting services to assist you in migrating your midrange data:

MediaMerge/PC - MM/PC is a windows utility that allows you to change media type and formats between attached SCSI drives. For example you may have tapes from your old Honeywell system that you would like to read on an AS/400, and MM/PC provides this type of functionality. MM/PC supports hundreds of popular software and media format to allow you the ultimate in flexibility and data interchange capability.

MediaMerge/UNIX - MM/UNIX is a software package that allows the UNIX user to restore, convert and duplicate data via SCSI attached devices totally from within the UNIX environment. The package can automatically detect, process and restore hundreds of different tape formats. Data can be Bit converted from ASCII to EBCDIC or visa-versa, and can optionally have Packed Decimal Fields decoded as well as other types of record based data manipulation. Simply stated, if you have a tape or a CD and you want to read or write data to or from your UNIX system, THIS is the software you need. Likewise, if you currently do all your tape I/O in a Mainframe environment, and desire to migrate away from this, again THIS is the software you need.

eMag Service Centers - Our state of the art Service Centers, where we developed MediaMerge/PC for internal use, allows you to outsource your conversion effort and minimize the impact it has on your production environment. With the best tools, hardware, and know-how we can perform migrations speedily and accurately to meet the deadlines you're faced with.
