eMagNet - Next Generation Non-native Restoration System
eMagNet is our next generation non-native tape restoration system. The eMagNet system uses a high-speed
fiber-optic backbone to mesh together computer clusters dedicated to simultaneously restoring data
from multiple tape drives. This constant and uninterrupted access removes the complexity of current
backup formats at the point where the data is read from the tape, thereby removing unnecessary
processing cycles and saving a tremendous amount of time.

In a multithreaded backup format, several systems are interwoven to one stream that is in turn backed up to tape. This results in a much more efficient backup for the client but in turn creates a more complex backup format to restore. Our current non-native restoration format handler system, as it is today, must distinguish which thread the client wants, then sift through the data finding that one thread, repeat this process for thread #2, etc. eMagNet and the multithreaded layer (MTL) will do this work for the backup format handler so the handler is simply processing the format independent of the threading issues.
The multithreaded layer now becomes the critical part of the eMagNet system. Today more and more formats are multithreaded and striped, and it's essential that the formats are processed in an efficient manner. The main function of the MTL is to unravel the threaded data and put the data into the correct processing queue. As a result eMagNet ensures the data is constantly being restored and thus exponentially increasing the processing time.
