E-mail Processing
The majority of discoverable information produced by companies today is found in e-mail or other messaging formats. Recreating and establishing a chain of events or knowledge trails typically involves the examination of e-mail message content, metadata, or attachments.
Technical standards have evolved immensely in a short period of time. There are now a few e-mail packages experiencing wide-spread adoption, whereas five years ago there were many more options from which to chose. As a result corporations, law firms, and legal review tools have developed standards around present-day software which requires conversion from other formats into those supported today.
No E-Discovery company is capable of handling more e-mail formats than eMag Solutions. Whether it's Microsoft Exchange, Novell GroupWise, or iPlanet Messaging Server, our messaging system experts are capable of producing e-mail messages from nearly any e-mail system, even those containing foreign scripts, such as Cyrillic.
E-Mail & PST Extraction
The eMag Exchange Extractor application can be used to extract mailboxes or messages from Microsoft Exchange Databases (EDBs) per Client requirements. The Exchange Extractor is a database driven application featuring extensive EDB processing and reporting capabilities.
De-Duplication
eMag uses a custom-developed proprietary system for data processing and de-duplication. We determine the originality of files based on the md5 hash value of each file. The tool itself can compare hashes both across custodians and within custodians’ files. We also have the option to filter out system files that are contained in the NSRL hash list.
Most customers seek a global de-duplication for “Unstructured data – user files” and a per-custodian de-duplication for “Unstructured data – e-mail.” However, our tools and processes allow us to alter this based on specific client needs.
These values can take into consideration parent-child relationships of messages/attachments or exclude them. Messages can be produced with or without attachments that were previously found by de-duplicating the "Unstructured data – user files".
eMag also partners with the industry-leading Equivio software to identify and suppress 'near-duplicates', allowing for an even greater reduction in data population, sometimes up to an additional 35% beyond traditional de-duplication.

Processes to Ensure Preservation of Original Data and Metadata
Our processes make sure the metadata is preserved. When the data resides on tape, the information about the data is stored with it as well. We restore back to disk using the existing attributes from the backup. MD5 hash is generated for each file as it is restored, in order to validate the restoration process. Finished Job Audits require confirmation of proper system configurations (directory path, system log files, scratch file, etc.), proper updating and naming conventions for all tapes, verification of location job logs, consistency of data size, and recognition of any inconsistencies that could invalidate restoration process results. During the de-duplication process, eMag’s tools employ a safe procedure so that the original metadata is not destroyed when migrating the data. Once the data is moved, the application validates that the source and destination file dates are identical and that no changes have occurred. All tools that we use implement a safe copy procedure that preserves the metadata of files when copying from one location to another.
