MediaMerge/FileFinder (MM/FF)

Reduce the Cost and Scope of an eDiscovery Request

MediaMerge/FileFinder Software

Today companies are currently required to maintain tape pools over varying data retention periods, and this can result in several potential compliance and migration issues.

  • These tape pools may exist in heterogeneous environments consisting of multiple backup formats, as well as retired backup systems.
  • Maintaining licenses for disparate backup systems or file-level catalog data is an expensive requirement.
  • Tapes might be archived that fall outside of current retention periods, preservation requirements and litigation holds, thus potentially making a company liable for damages.
  • In the event of a discovery request, producing responsive data from hundreds or thousands of tapes is equal to finding the proverbial needle in the haystack and can become a very expensive proposition.

MediaMerge/FileFinder

MM/FileFinder is a compliance and retention tool that enables corporations and law firms to significantly reduce the scope of eDiscovery projects, thus saving time and ultimately reducing litigation costs.

Maintain your Electronically Stored Information (ESI)

MM/FileFinder enables you to determine the backup tapes that are necessary for continuing archival in order to meet current data retention requirements and in most cases dispose of tapes that fall outside of the retention period. In some cases you may have to adjust retention polices to avoid archiving tapes that are not needed and serve no useful purpose. In addition you are able to identify and preserve backup tapes dependent on current preservation requirements and litigation holds.

As a result you are able to significantly reduce existing and potential costs:

  • Dispose of tapes that fall outside of current retention periods and save on archiving costs
  • Help avoid potentially damaging evidence by holding tapes that fall outside of current litigation holds simply because you don't know the date the tape was created and what's on it
  • Avoid potential fines and remain compliant by being able to manage and account for your entire tape backup catalog

How it Works

  • Interrogate and adopt the management of the media catalogs for your software backup system
  • Once the tape pool has been catalogued, you are able to centrally manage and track all active or retired tapes
  • File-level scans produce the file names that exist on each tape, along with the server info and the backup session, to determine the relevance of each tape
  • Scope is significantly reduced enabling you to restore only relevant tapes
